We are very sorry to hear that Columbus Division of Police Commander Mike Gray passed away yesterday. He retired from the Division just a few weeks ago, after more than three decades of distinguished service. We had the pleasure of working with him and called him a friend.
He not only welcomed Starfish to his zone, but he was thrilled to have us there. He would always try to arrange his schedule to be there and would actively participate in our events. He truly loved interacting with the public and believed deeply in enhancing the bond between police and the community.
He loved to let others shine and took great pride in seeing his officers succeed. He was humble, kind, gracious, and a dear friend to many.
He once told a group of students at a Books & Badges reading that he entered policing to help people. There is no doubt that he succeeded. He not only helped the people he served, but he helped his fellow officers, and he helped us. We were very lucky to know him, and our hearts go out to his family, loved ones, and fellow officers. We're so sorry for your loss.
