Yesterday, we had the joy of surprising Columbus Division of Police Officer Shawn Lutz with the Starfish Make a Difference Award at 5 Precinct Substation in Linden, where he was able to be congratulated by his friends and fellow officers.
Officer Lutz had no idea it was coming, which made it all the more special. For nearly a decade, he’s quietly and efficiently built bridges between CPD and the community, organizing events, mentoring youth, and showing up for people in ways that don't come with fanfare—but absolutely deserve it.
He’s a regular at our Books & Badges readings, where his connection with the kids is undeniable. He’s helped organize countless community events, from backpack drives to trick-or-treat nights and block parties—always working to create moments that bring people together and build trust.
We’re so grateful for his partnership and for the opportunity to celebrate him.
